Facebook Places: a step-by-step guide

In our previous post we highlighted some advantages of using Facebook Places as part of your marketing efforts. Now we will guide you through finding/creating your Place, and merging it with your existing Page if you have already set one up.

Checking If Your Place Already Exists

Your Place may already have been created by a Facebook user during a previous visit.

To find out if your Place already exists, search for your establishment name on www.facebook.com via the ‘Search’ bar at the top. Be sure to look under the Places sub-heading. (If you have a Page already it will also appear here but under Pages).

If you find your Place, you may continue to claim it as your own as per Option 2 below.

Option 1: Your Place is Not Found – How to Create It

If your Place is not found, you will have to first go to the physical location of your establishment.

Once there, use your mobile device to log on to Facebook.

Click on Check-In. Facebook will now acquire your location and provide a list of nearby places you can check into.

You can now add your Place it by clicking the ‘+’ or Add a Place icon.

Enter your Place’s name and description (this can be edited later on).

Click Add. Congratulations! You have now successfully created your Place and you may check-in.

Option 2: Your Place Already Exists – Claiming It As Your Property

On the main Facebook page, search for your Place using the Search bar at the top.

Click on your Place to open.

At the top right, click on the gear-icon

Click on Is This Your Business?

Check the certification and Continue

You will be asked to complete some Business Information and then hit Claim

You will now have a Place Page for your establishment.

If you do not have a Facebook Page yet, this will serve as a good start.  Continue to edit, add profile picture and then utilise as a normal page.

This video will help explain the difference beween Facebook Pages and Places and then show you how to create and claim your Place.

Merging Your Existing Facebook Page With Your New Facebook Places Page

If you already have a Facebook Page, you have the option of merging the two pages.

Why Merge?  This is a clever option as you can then manage your complete Facebook presence from one point and not separately from both a Place and Page perspective.  After the merge, everyone who liked your Facebook Page before will remain linked to it.  The merged Page will now also include Place information like maps and check-ins of customers.

Go to your existing Facebook Page

If your business icon does not automatically appear on the top right, click on Manage and ‘Use Facebook as ……Your Establishment

Click on Manage again, and Edit Page

On the left, click on Resources

Click the Merge duplicate Pages link. This link will only appear if you admin two Pages with similar names.

A dialogue will show Pages and Places you admin that qualify to be merged. Select the Page(s) you wish to merge and Confirm. If you’re merging a Place and a Page, they must have the same address information.

And there you go – an improved Page with additional Places functionality.  Now get everyone to check-in!
